HOW TO LOSE ABDOMINAL FAT – THE MYTH BUSTED

Channel surf any night of the week and you’re likely to find an infomercial about the latest, greatest, and might I add, easy way to lose belly fat. Claims are made that if you use any one of these devices for just 5 minutes a day, you will burn fat and transform your body into ripped muscles with lean, rock-hard abs. Are these claims legitimate? If you perform abdominal exercises, will that reduce fat and your waistline?

A recent study conducted at Southern Illinois University tested this very concept. Twenty-four healthy individuals were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups. One group was placed on a 6-week abdominal exercise program. They performed 15 minutes of specified, abdominal exercises 5 days a week. The other group made no changes to their activities of daily living or diet. Thorough assessments were taken of all 24 participants prior to the study measuring total body fat, abdominal fat, waist circumference, and abdominal muscular endurance.  At the conclusion of the 6 weeks, all participants were reassessed. The study concluded that abdominal exercise alone is NOT sufficient to reduce waistline or abdominal fat. The only improvement in the exercise group was increased abdominal strength. In other words, the exercise group was able to perform a greater number of curl ups in the muscular endurance test. However, they showed no reduction in overall body fat, abdominal fat, or waist circumference.
